In the early 1900’s, Peter H. Furth worked as a Field Underwriter for The St. Paul Fire & Marine Insurance Company, residing in New Ulm. In 1939 his son, Theodore H. Furth started a small independent agency in New Ulm. In 1965, Ted’s son, James R. Furth took over the family business.

In 1970, Jim merged the Furth Insurance Agency with the Meile Insurance Agency, which was founded in 1893 by Adolph Meile and Nick Henningson and located at 9 1/2 N. Minnesota. The merger created the Furth-Meile Insurance Agency, and was moved downstairs to 9 N. Minnesota. Jim’s son, Paul T. Furth, joined the business in 1979.

Paul’s nephew, Thomas R. Furth, graduated from St. John’s University in 1991 (where he studied business management and played football for the legendary coach, John Gagiardi) and went to work for The St. Paul Companies (ironically, the very same company his Great Great Grandfather, Peter, worked for) holding positions in both Underwriting and Claim Adjusting. Tom joined Furth-Meile Insurance in 2000.
